I feel bad that most of my posts lately are just my monthly book reviews .. but oh well, here comes another one! 🙂
So, this month I only read three books BUT! I read them all within the same week so that has to count for something, right?
The VERY first book that I read this month was The Other Woman by Sandie Jones. You guys!!! This book is everything that I wanted The Wife Between Us to be from last month. It’s a suspenseful thriller and was featured on Reese Witherspoon’s book club. I love that it had the ability to actually fool me .. because I read so many books, I feel like I can predict the plot of a story before I have the chance to actually read it all the way through. I don’t necessarily mind that but once in awhile when it’s nice when a story is original and throws me for a loop. This book did that for me. I thought it was going to go one way and then it went a completely different direction – highly recommend! 4/5 stars.
Almost immediately after finishing The Other Woman, I got the ping from my library that Daisy Jones & The Six was waiting for me. I put a hold on this book forever ago and honestly kind of forgot about it …. I wasn’t even really sure I wanted to read it but it was also featured on Reese Witherspoon’s book club (sense a trend here?) and everyone was clamoring to read it so I figured it couldn’t hurt. Oh my goodness! This style of story is first of all SO not what I’d normally want to read but I found myself unable to put it down. It’s written in a faux documentary style … it’s fiction but Taylor Jenkins Reid’s writing is so compelling that I got confused a few pages in and wondered if it was actually based on a real band. (Had to Google it; it’s not.) The story is a “documentary” style look back at a fictional band called Daisy Jones & The Six and sort of tells of their rise to fame and what happened to cause their downfall. It was a fresh story, compelling, and I really enjoyed it. 4/5 stars!
After loving Daisy Jones, I decided to try another Taylor Jenkins Reid title – One True Loves. This book is about a woman who loses her husband in a plane crash and moves on with her life, finds love again, is about to get married … when her husband is found ALIVE two years later and returns home. It’s very Pearl Harbor-esque (the movie) and I don’t know how I feel about this book. It’s a sad book. I mean, there’s really no way to give a story plot like this a happy ending for everyone, right? And I hate sad books. I like to escape and feel happy when I read, not sad and depressed. That said, Reid’s writing is so moving, I couldn’t stop thinking about this story after I finished so … you know, if emotional and dramatic is your type of tea, then I’d say go ahead and give this book a try. Only 3.5/5 stars for me (because I like to be HAPPY when I finish a book!).
