Earlier this week, my one and only boy, our middle child D turned GREAT 8 YEARS OLD!
I’d meant to do this post right after we celebrated his birthday but A has been home all week with me so blog/social media took a big backseat. She’s home because her school decided to temporarily close for a week due to high numbers of staff who were out with COVID. Anyway, she’s supposed to go back next week so hopefully I’ll be back to my blog groove by the end of this month!
But back to D’s birthday …
His birthday typically falls on MLK weekend so it’s always a treat to have extra long weekends to celebrate him. On Sat/Sun, we didn’t do any official celebrating as the kids had things on their schedules we needed to get to. D had soccer clinic and A had a playdate with a friend. Funny enough, said friend’s older brother is the same age as D — they were in the same preschool class together and are also taking the same soccer clinic. So essentially we parents just brought the little sisters to soccer practice and let the younger sister play together while we waited.
While I was with the two youngers, E went on a breakfast date with her daddy. I can’t believe how grown she’s looking these days .. she’s less than a head shorter than me now.
We also took advantage of the extended time home to reorganize/purge a few areas of the house. It wasn’t a planned thing at all but both J & I felt the “new year cleaning” spirit and independently started attacking spaces in the home that had been bothering us LOL. For J, it was apparently the kitchen pantry …
And for me, it was A’S BEDROOM! OMG, I’d just done a big toy purge right before Christmas of her room and already it had descended into utter chaos. Here it is after I attacked it 😂
I ended up taking out this old kid sized chair that used to be D’s when he was a toddler. I put it in the living room to eventually donate or sell but Daisy found her way to it…
Monday was D’s actual birthday so of course, per family tradition, I set out his birthday balloons with gifts.
Want to hear a funny story? Ok, so I stayed up kind of late on Sunday night wrapping the gifts and getting the balloons ready… I was pretty tired, right? I decided to not set an alarm for Monday morning, especially since it was a holiday and nobody had school/work. I knew I’d hear the kids once they started waking up anyway since I’m a light sleeper. Well, I always sleep with ear plugs in (because I’m a light sleeper) and I guess I was just BONE TIRED because the kids did indeed wake up but I did not hear them. And neither did J, because he sleeps like the dead. I …. farted in my sleep…. and then immediately woke up because I heard a trio of giggles emanating from INSIDE MY ROOM. THE KIDS WERE IN OUR ROOM. They’d woken up and were just standing there, watching J & I sleep and I guess willing us to silently wake up? But my fart made them laugh 😂 LOL!!!
Okay so anyway, D was DYING to open his presents and we typically make the kids wait until “after school” or at least after breakfast to open their birthday presents. I let him open just one 😉
Then we made our birthday breakfast special – bacon with pancakes and birthday candles!
After breakfast, D got to open the rest of his gifts (highlights included his own Amazon Alexa Kids for his room and SnapShips building thing from Amazon).
Then we all had to get ready to head out to watch Sing 2 with …
Our favorite birthday twin! We ate lunch at the theater together while watching Sing 2 (which was such a cute movie, btw!). The kids hadn’t seen each other in a MONTH because we had been sick with COVID and then the other family had been traveling/gone on vacation. There were lots of squeals and hugs and Happy Birthdays exchanged.
And just for funsies, here are the maknaes of our families 😂
After the movie/lunch, we came home and had about an hour to rest before it was time to head off to D’s favorite Korean restaurant for dinner! We’ve been coming here for his birthday dinner pretty much every year except for 2021 because they were only open for takeout (so we did takeout at home). We grubbed and then I’d brought a birthday cake we ordered from Safeway to the restaurant so the staff brought it out to us after dinner. We sang Happy Birthday one more time!
Sisters enjoying their post-dinner cake 😉
After dinner, we loaded up in the car and drove back home – the restaurant is pretty far from home so it was relatively late once we got back. Bedtime and one last selfie with our birthday boy before tucking everyone in for the night!
D – you are kind, intelligent, and sweet. You are so thoughtful of everyone around you and EVER patient with your sisters (especially that sassy younger sister!). You love to snuggle with me and wrestle with dad; I love seeing the world through your eyes and thoughts. You’re a happy kid and LOVE all the things that I love: being cozy, fun surprises, and reading. I love you so so so much, my precious boy! Happiest of 8th birthdays to you, little man.
