This is a little late in recapping but we had a low-key & mellow Father’s Day celebrating our favorite dad ever Mr. Sophia K Says!
To start off with, I think both J & I really don’t put a lot of fuss into Mother’s Day & Father’s Day. Mother’s Day back in May was pretty much just another Sunday and I actually had to do a lot of solo parenting because of sports and kids’ schedules. Father’s Day was a bit more low key (no sports) buuuut there weren’t any gifts, grilling, etc. I didn’t even tell the kids to make Father’s Day cards but they’re old enough now to know when Father’s Day is and made their cards WITHOUT ME PROMPTING. Get that! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: having big kids is AWESOME!
Also, I saw this on TikTok but this year I decided to start a new tradition of taking the kids’ handmade art/cards for Father’s Day and keeping it in this notebook. Then every year, we will add to the notebook and all of the Father’s Day letters will be in one spot for my husband to look back at. I also printed off a few Instax Polaroid pictures of my favorite moments of J with the kids from the last year and taped them into the book for him. This literally was a Saturday night 11th hour inspired gift. I always have a ton of spare notebooks on hand so I was able to whip everything together in 10 minutes. I think J liked it though! (I’m not going to show the kids’ letters/art because that’s personal for J.)
I know I said there were no gifts but I guess the one gift we did give J was the gift of sleeping in. It’s honestly the best thing I can give him in this season of life we’re in. So we had a slowwww Sunday morning, J got to sleep in and open his cards, then we all got ready and headed off to church together. I wore this new dress from CJLA and I LOOOOOVE it. Look at how pretty and sweet the simple floral print on it is!
I snuck this picture of D praying in big church service on Sunday. One thing that I really love that the pandemic forced onto us is teaching our kids how to sit as a family in big church. I’ll admit that pre-COVID I relied HEAVILY on church nursery – to the point that if nursery weren’t available as an option, I’d rather forego church that week. To be fair, it is really hard to focus and pay attention to service when newborns & toddlers are climbing and screeching all over you. I understand why kids’ church and church nursery are vital ministries; because parents want to be able to listen to the sermon uninterrupted!! And last year, when A was 3 and first learning to sit through the entire “big church” service with us, it was definitely hard. I love to take notes and hand letter my notes through the sermon and that had to stop for the last year as I couldn’t do both that and handle A during church. Buuuuuut over the last year, my kids have really learned how to sit still and even pay attention to the service. Since the older two can read, they even look at the scripture memory verses and love to sing along with the hymn/praise lyrics up at the front of the sanctuary. I snapped this picture, though, because I realized that both E & D have also learned the rhythms of the church service and know when to stand/sit/pray and when it’s okay to whip out their crayons and color/draw for a bit (when the pastor is preaching). For the majority of the last year, I’ve been whispering prompts to them “SIT! SHH! OK we’re PRAYING NOW!” as the service is happening and on Father’s Day, I looked over at D to tell him to pray and he was already praying …. so this picture got taken because I was proud and honestly a little shocked.
After church, we did our usual post-church routine of grocery shopping and then lunch. Lately the two younger kids have been liking to stay in the car with daddy but E looooves being my grocery shopping buddy. Also with the June 15 COVID restrictions being lifted in California, grocery stores don’t require you to wear a mask anymore!! E & I still brought ours in because I wasn’t sure of the rules but nobody was wearing them inside so I told her we could pull them down.
After lunch we came home and E realllllly wanted to bake cupcakes for Father’s Day. Le sigh. If you know me, you know I love nothing more than few hours of quiet and a solid nap post church on Sunday buuuut I wanted to encourage E’s thoughtful gesture so … we went ahead and baked cupcakes! A helped her sister bake and D only came to join during the decorating part.
I am happy to say that after these were baked, I did indeed get to go and take my Sunday afternoon nap, though 😜
Oh! And this is random but I was looking at my wedding ring on Sunday and I AM NOT LYING, it was BLACK. Like, not a black diamond obviously but there was clearly a BLACK TINT on my ring, like it almost looked gray. I have no idea why but it’s also been SOOOO long since I last cleaned it (like probably over a year since the last cleaning). I have this ring cleaning machine from Amazon that apparently uses sonic waves or something fancy to clean your ring. I’ve only used it once since purchasing it but my ring was SO DISGUSTING that it needed to be done. And y’all. LOOK AT THIS DIAMOND SHINE. I think I genuinely gasped out loud when I took it out of the machine. First of all, the water was murky from all the gunk that got washed off and my ring looked WHITE (especially in comparison to how black & dark it was pre-cleaning). I really wish I’d gotten a “before” picture for comparison but LOOK AT THIS BABY SPARKLE.
And that is it! That was our simple and laid-back Father’s Day this year. No pomp, no circumstance. J also took a nap at some point on this day and watched a ton of Sunday sports after church so I’d say he was happy. He’s not a difficult person to please 🙂 I hope you guys had a great day celebrating the fantastic dads in your life!
