Hello, my lovely peoples. If you know me at all IRL, then you’ll know the epic journey I’ve been on with my hair over the past few years. Okay, well, maybe epic isn’t quite the right word to describe it but I have struggled with it for different reasons in recent years. Today, I have a really cool hair find to share with you guys! Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo has been the long searched for solution to my dirty hair woes and I’m going to tell you why.
A Little Bit of History
Growing up, I took a shower every day and ALWAYS washed my hair, every. single. day. I’m sure when I was really little, like maybe 4, 5, 6 years it wasn’t a daily hair washing (or maybe it was? I just genuinely don’t remember) but once I was old enough to start taking care of my own showers, I know I would wash my hair every single day. To me, it was like brushing my teeth – I just did it daily because that’s what I thought I was supposed to do. Nobody told me any different?
Once I hit puberty/high school, I quickly realized that if I didn’t wash my hair every day, it would become a gross, greasy mess. My hair is super fine and thin which meant that when it got dirty or oily, it would go limp which was SUCH big no/no back then (and probably still is now lol).
So, I went about through high school, college, well into adulthood/having kids just washing my hair every good ol day until after having D, and I started losing SO MUCH hair postpartum. Postpartum hair loss is normal but the amount that would come out in the shower was insane and I started looking into ways to help resolve that. One easy solution I found was to just wash it less often. Huh. Around this time was also when dry shampoo was really starting to have its heyday and I thought I’d try reducing the amount of my hair washing and compensating with dry shampoo in between.
What followed was a few years of love/hate relationships with my hair washing frequency. I know this is really turning into a long post about nothing but my hair (how boring) but basically, the cyclical issue I found myself having was I loved that not washing my hair every day was (a) more convenient, (b) seemed to cut down on how greasy my scalp would get – aka the more I washed it, the faster it would get oily, (c) my highlights lasted longer (the toner wouldn’t wash out as fast). The downside was that I REALLY HATED DRY SHAMPOO. I tried so many brands but without fail, while they LOOKED beautiful and made my hair smell fresh, my scalp would be SO irritated by the end of the day. It would itch and flake and I almost felt like my scalp was just as irritated by dry shampoo as much as it was helped by it. And trust, me I tried them ALL and they ALL did this.
Sometime last year or the year before, I decided to just swear off dry shampoo altogether. It was a tough transition as I think my scalp was used to having product help absorb the oils but with consistency, I was able to make it so that I could go about 3 days without a hair wash and my scalp wouldn’t itch/flake in between. I told a girlfriend about my revelation about just cutting out dry shampoo cold turkey and she agreed, saying “I mean … yea, I never understood why people would want to put something that’s flammable in their hair like that.” (I’m looking at you, B, I know you read my posts!). So true, though, right?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOURSELF.
Anyway, so here I was earlier in 2020, locked down in quarantine, in a pandemic, just enjoying my every 3 days hair washing routine… but when I got really honest with myself, I had to admit that the third day was rough for my hair. Hubby hated hugging me, he would say my hair smelled SO bad (gag loL!). The oils would sort of start making their appearance by day 3 and I would look a little (a lot) haggard. A top bun wouldn’t really do much to hide it. Throw in the fact that I’d been doing extra workouts to help burn off the quarantine snacks and my hair got dirty even faster .. really, the truth was I felt like I could use some dry shampoo to help my hair along on the non-wash days.
Lots of Googling later (okay fine, it was just one quick Google search) and I found this little baby by Briogeo.
I’d heard of Briogeo before because back when I was trying to figure out how to help my itchy/flaky scalp (which I didn’t realize at the time was caused by dry shampoo) I’d tried a few of Briogeo’s other scalp-health products. What really caught my eye about their dry shampoo, though, was the fact that it wasn’t an aerosol. It’s just a powder that you “puff” out into your hair by squeezing the bottle.
Let me tell you guys .. I’ve been trying this dry shampoo on a weekly basis for the past 6 months and it’s the real deal. It does NOT irritate my scalp in the least and does all the other magical dry-shampoo stuff like making your hair look and smell fresher/go longer between washes. First, you shake it up really well, twist the nozzle to the side to expose the hole where the product comes out, then squeeze the two sides of the bottle together to pinch out a puff of the product.
Admittedly, it’s a little messier than an aerosol spray dry shampoo, and the constant twisting of the nozzle to close the bottle so you can shake it, then twist it back to open it (the product will shake out everywhere if you don’t close it first before shaking) can be a little tedious BUT I’ll take the slight inconvenience over a flaky scalp any day.
I wish I’d timed this post better because then I could take some live-action photos to show you how I actually apply and use it but as I’m writing this, my hair is freshly washed so you’ll just have to take my word for it 🙂
