It’s been quiet the past few weeks here on the SKS blog front. Let me let you in on a little secret… I can almost always guarantee that when the blog (or my other social media) has been quiet, it’s because the rest of my life (emotionally/mentally) is a hot mess and I don’t have the energy to take on anything “optional”. I think I’ll divulge a bit more of what the past few weeks have involved for me in separate blog posts (if I feel comfortable… I’m still debating if I will or not) but just know that it’s been draining, exhausting, emotional stuff and my tendency when life hits me hard is to withdraw from everyone and everything. Thank you to the few friends who texted to check up on me or were sensitive/privy to what I was dealing with. They know me and love me well! 🤍
Moving on though! Life still happened during the month of March and we were all busy with kids’ activities, weekend things, school things … so I thought I’d do a big round up post that gave a recap of life lately along with what our most recent weekend looked like!
life lately
The first thing that happened in the last few weeks is that J turned 37! (I almost wrote 38, guys .. I swear, after I turned 36 last year I just started fast forwarding my age to 40). His birthday fell on a Monday and I had choir practice so in true, middle aged parent fashion, J just took the kids out to dinner by himself to a fancy Italian restaurant. They all had a blast!
Next up, we went to D’s first ever taekwondo competition … he kept telling me he WASN’T nervous but then his hands were clammy as heck so … 🥶 Anyway, he placed second! Woohoo! He got a big heavy medal and everything for it.
We enjoyed the beautiful weather we had recently…
And had a big IEP regarding E’s middle school transition this month!
I played around with some new press-on nail brands (Finger Suit on the L and Static Nails on the R). Guys, I don’t think my love for press-ons is going anywhere anytime soon. I’m. Obsessed. I think I mainly just love how versatile they are? The Static Nails set on the right are actually normal french tip nails but I didn’t love their shape and how they looked (like true talons, they were curved all awkwardly and pointy) so I filed them down and painted them a pastel ombre. And the Finger Suit set on the left, I mean … I could never create a design that detailed with just nail polish on my own and getting that done with gel nails at a salon is stupidly expensive.
This is sort of random but this dirty little Bernedoodle was sent home from the groomers without his wash & cut this month because he wouldn’t stop growling and being mean to the groomer. He only has ONE groomer who knows how to deal with his BS and unfortunately this appointment wasn’t with her. We took it anyway because he’s REALLY dirty but… they called us after an hour and said they’ve been trying & trying and Kylo is just not having it. Look how happy he looked to be picked up. What a brat.
Speaking of dog updates, Daisy got spayed. Keeping her calm so her incision could heal was an insane journey. She chewed through two of those plastic cones you see her wearing so we switched to this onesie looking thing that would protect her incision and she would literally poop through it in her crate… it was awful. I’m glad to say she’s completely healed and back to being a normal puppy now.
I mean … look how cute she is! And she also had a grooming appointment recently but unlike Kylo, SHE DID GREAT so she’s all clean and fluffy.
D also had a few sick days this month… he spiked a fever one random day and because schools have a 24-hour fever free policy, he got to play hooky with me at home. I took him on a date and we went to lunch and then I let him go ham with Dogman books from the bookstore. I think I bought him 8 books or something and he read all 8 that same afternoon when we got home 🙃
A has been LOVING her ballet class… she learned the feet positions recently and keeps asking me to quiz her so she can demonstrate them all. She’s going to be in a big recital in June that the entire studio participates in and they’ve been allowing parents to watch when they rehearse during class times .. it is adorably cute. That is all I’ll say. And mom brag – I feel like they intentionally place the kids on stage so that the ones who “get it” or understand the choreo better are in the middle and she is dead center 😏 #dancemom
And here’s a last one of me & E recently just because 🙂 A friend told me she saw E walking out of church with J and for a split second she thought it was me walking with him but then she also saw that I was already on the other side of the courtyard so she was really confused. Guys, E is just barely a few inches shorter than me. J guesses that by this time next year she’ll be my height 🥲
A few other recently happenings that I don’t have pictures for include my return to 6am in-person Bar classes! I might have already blogged about that but I’m back in my groove and loving it. Also, I’m currently recovering from laryngitis. I completely lost my voice last week (it started cracking during choir practice last Monday and I woke up Tuesday with it GONE). It’s about 70% back now but I still definitely sound hoarse. If you’ve ever tried to parent three littles with no voice, it’s impossible. Just letting you know.
weekend recap
So now onto what we did this weekend!
We started with long family hike on our local trail. We took both dogs with us too and everyone did great! We walked to our local library and back which was about a 4-5 mile hike in total.
This was Daisy’s first long excursion since getting the all-clear post surgery and she was SO excited to be out.
When we got home, we ate lunch and then sort of enjoyed the post-exercise laziness that usually sets in because everyone is tired. We relaxed…
And then I dropped D off at a birthday for a friend. It was a football themed party and the parents made custom little Nike jerseys with every kids’ last name on it. It was freaking adorable.
After dropping him off I went to have drinks with another school mom and we sat/chatted for a few hours before calling it a night (we both said that we love being in our jammies by 8pm so I felt like I found a kindred spirit).
Once we got the kids in bed and down for the night, I poured myself another glass of wine and watched Legally Blonde on TV. I just needed to unwind from the socializing I’d done (LOL INTROVERTS) so this was perfect.
I’ve been letting Daisy have more and more free reign of the house when we’re home. She’s super snuggly and cuddly and I want to encourage that behavior so I try to let her practice it when I have time. She’s still crated at night or when we’re not home, though – I mean, she is a 6 month old puppy. Anyway, she loved watching TV with me.
Sunday, J took the kids to church solo because I was up coughing half the night so I streamed from home. I can’t figure out my laryngitis. It came on suddenly with no other symptoms, my throat never hurt (still doesn’t), no congestion or fever, etc. No other symptoms, not even coughing during the day! Then about a night or two ago, I started coughing but only at night and it’ll attack me and not let go of me. I’m not coughing anything up, it feel like a very dry/irritated cough. And then I wake up in the morning and am fine again? I don’t know what’s happening, guys.
More Daisy free-reign time while I made lunch. See? This is why she gets to be free and Kylo doesn’t. I didn’t even tell her to lay on the floor, she just plops down next to me and if I move, she gets up to move. If the kids are around, she does get a bit more excited to see them but NEVER jumping on them or biting them the way Kylo would. Is it super clear that I have a favorite pooch? 😂
I made spaghetti for the kids but J brought home some local deli sandwiches for us to have. I haven’t had a sandwich from here in a LONG time and they’re some of my favorite sandwiches. Yum!!
And that was our weekend! I have some consistent content scheduled to come again starting this week so make sure to subscribe via email to my blog if you haven’t already!
Until next time…
