Hi guys! It’s been a long time since I’ve done a detailed “Day in the Life” type of post so I thought – why not? Let’s do one! Funny enough, I decided to do this post on a total whim so I literally had no idea when I woke up this morning that I’d be documenting this day, bwahahaha. I chose this day from a few weeks back because it was a good balance of “busy day but not insane.” I have days that are a lot lighter in schedule than this and also days that feel a lot crazier than this so I felt like this one was a good “middle ground” representation. Let’s jump in!
I, as you know, am up before the sun. I typically get up, get dressed in gym clothes, put on my Comfy, then head to the kitchen for coffee. Once I have my coffee, I come to my little office/desk area and sit down to get ready for the day.
Everyone in my house is still asleep at this point, including the dog. But he’s also a super light sleeper so when I tried to crouch down to get this picture of him he was totally staring at me already.
I typically use my quiet morning times to plan for my day, catch up on some blogs, scroll social media a little bit (all things to just help my brain wake up) and then jump into my Bible reading. I’ve been reading through the whole Bible in chronological order this year following the reading plan from The Bible Recap. They have an accompanying podcast that goes with each day’s reading so you can make sure you’re following along with the context of what you read. It’s been great for me so far!
After Bible, I moved onto a workout. It varies by day … I do a combination of Bar Method, at home strength training/weight lifting, and cardio on my Soul Cycle bike. Today was a cardio day 🙂
After my workout, I rinsed off and got my kids up for the day…. sometimes a kid or two wakes up before I go get them though.
This is also when Kylo gets to come out and use the bathroom outside, etc.
The girls and their matching haircuts have me dyinggggggg. They just look like mini versions of each other. I have no idea where D was at this point… obviously not eating breakfast, though.
Once everyone was breakfasted, lunches were packed, and we were ready to go, I dropped the big kids off at school. Today we drove to school because I needed to get to campus early so I could help as a traffic volunteer. It’s super similar to doing the greeting at Day Camp and funny enough, I always have to suppress the urge to open the car door and yell “GOOD MORNING CAMPER!” at the students. *Calm down, Sophia. Calm down.*
After volunteering, I headed back home where I cleaned up breakfast dishes, emptied the dishwasher from the night before, etc etc. Just picked up around the kitchen a tad….
And then headed to my room to get dressed for the day. Today was a no-makeup day… I just threw on jeans and a comfy hoodie to go with the “dressed down” vibe of my face LOL.
I turned on a podcast and got busy taking care of a few more chores. Right now, I am obsessed with listening to THIS podcast:
I’m trying really hard to savor it so I truly only listen if I’m doing chores or walking the dog. This day I listened while folding laundry… I don’t know how you guys do laundry in your home but I do laundry every day and I like to fold straight from the dryer. I’ve found over the years that this is the best system to make sure there aren’t loads back piled and also to make sure that the clean clothes actually get put away. I put all three of my kids’ clothes folded into this one basket (each kid has a third of it) and then I put the entire basket in the hallway. They know that when they get home from school, if they see this basket in the hall, that means they need to put their clean clothes away. I do put away A’s clothes for her, though, because … she’s 4 and can’t be trusted not to make a mess. If I’m honest, E also can’t be trusted but she’s also 10 so she knows better 😂
After folding laundry, I did some “work”. I posted this fun new IGTV (if haven’t watched it yet, you should!). I did the TikTok 4-course meal challenge with my husband – the challenge is 4 courses of a meal (drinks, apps, main, dessert) with corresponding rounds of rock, paper scissors. The winner of each round gets to determine what we’re eating 😉
Around mid-morning I had a call scheduled with an older sister-in-Christ who goes to my church. We’re reading through The Peacemaker together. We started reading/discussing When People Are Big and God Is Small last year when I was really struggling with some really heart-breaking stuff behind the scenes. She offered to walk alongside with me but also suggested we read the latter book as I was dealing with a lot of people-pleasing idols and it was making it hard for me to set boundaries with people who were sinning against me/my family. ANYWAY, I’ve really enjoyed our friendship and so once we finished the first book, we decided to continue with this book! Random: I need to doodle/write when I’m listening to someone speak (unless it’s a face to face). When I’m sitting in church and listening to the pastor preach, I’m taking actively taking notes because it helps me listen. When I’m doing these phone conversations discussing the book I’m reading, I need to doodle/scribble. This isn’t note taking, it’s literally just scribbling random words here and there, it could be an insignificant words like the word “and” …. just whatever my brain latches onto, I need to distract my hands so my brain can listen better. Does this mean I’m ADHD? LOL.
My calls with this sister are long 😂😅 They’re not always this long (and actually, I took this screenshot only midway through our convo, we ended up talking for 3 hours this day) but they do take up a good chunk of time. I’m so thankful for her being willing to invest in me and my life, though! God has grown me a LOT over the past year and reading these books/discussing them with her have been instrumental in that growth.
After our phone call, I was STARVINGGGG. I’ve been enjoying a hot lunch lately and with J WFH-ing for the indefinite future, it makes it feel a bit more worthwhile to cook up a fresh lunch. I have been on a chicken thigh kick lately… I’ve always just had chicken breast but honestly it’s not my favorite. It’s so dry!! But chicken thigh is so juicy and delicious 😂 I pop a pack into the air fryer with some Trader Joe’s seasoning, add a salad, and voila! Lunch! I like to give myself a proper lunch break and watch on Netflix while I’m eating too. Right now, I’m on season 2 of Never Have I Ever.
After a quick lunch break, I had to rush off to pick up A from school because she had after-school tutoring at our neighbor’s house. Fun fact: I’ve never taught any of our kids to read 😅😅. It started with E… with her being on the spectrum and learning differently, despite my best efforts, I could NOT get her to learn. I left it to her kindergarten & 1st grade teachers and she learned to read just fine eventually. Next was D… I thought for sure I’d be able to flex my ex-teacher muscles with him and teach him to read. NO. It was so frustrating for me as a parent, I kept losing my patience lol. It was at that time that I learned that our neighbor (who is also coincidentally D’s former preschool teacher) did tutoring on the side for all grades and she offered to do the reading (and some math) with him. He did tutoring with her all the way until the pandemic hit!! Anyway, now that A is in pre-K I once again enlisted the neighbor’s help and on this day, A had her VERY FIRST lesson with her. I managed to snap a pic of J walking … errr, carrying … her down to the neighbor’s house. I was on my way to pick up the big kids from their school (basically I just did a shuttle bus type of thing: pick up A, drop her at home so J could take her to tutoring, then leave for the big kids’ school immediately after).
Two big kids in my car! We walk to school in the mornings but I always drive to get them at the end of the day. Everyone is tired and usually it’s stupidly hot in the afternoon plus our after school schedule is tight with extracurriculars and stuff so it just makes more sense to do a 3 minute drive home versus a 12 minute walk home.
Once we got home, I set up the big kids with homework, piano practice, etc…
Then went to pick up A from the neighbor’s house. D & I used to have a tradition of racing home together from the neighbor’s house to see who would win. (I always let him win.) It’s sort of trippy that we’re at that point with A now.
After getting back home with A, I had to load up the big kids for taekwondo! A lot of my days feel like a really well-choreographed dance. There’s a ton of moving parts but as long as I’m prepared for how the timing of everything goes down, it generally feels smooth.
I get a little bit of downtime in my car while the kids are at their taekwondo class so I brought my Kindle to read. The book I was reading on this day was While We Were Dating by Jasmine Guillory. I can’t say I recommend it unfortunately. It was a bit too steamy and graphic for my liking, which was surprising because I’ve read her other books and I don’t feel like any of them were like this. But I do like and can recommend her first book which is The Wedding Date. That one was super cute!
After taekwondo, believe it or not it was close to 5pm when I got home. For dinner, I’d picked up this “ready to go meal” from Whole Foods the day before. It was spaghetti with meatballs and all I had to do was heat it up and add a salad. Easy dinner!
While the spaghetti & meatballs were in the oven, I stepped out to my garden to water the plants a tad…
And then after dinner, D had a piano lesson. He wouldn’t normally have piano lessons this late (after dinner) but his regular piano time interferes with soccer at the moment so we’re kind of squeezing him in here and there when the teacher has time. And yes, it’s still a Zoom piano lesson which I don’t LOVE but I also can’t deny the convenience of it.
After piano, I GOT READY FOR BED LOL! Listen, I have people all the time making comments about my early wake up time, like, omg I could never do that, how do you do that, etc. The trick is you have to sleep early. You’re shifting your lifestyle, you know? You can’t expect to sleep at 11pm or midnight and wake up at 4am and sustain that habit, right? I try to be in bed by 8-9pm most days. This particular day I was extra tired so I got ready for bed at 730 LOL. And for those of you object and say, “oh but the quiet night hours when my kids are sleeping are when I get my ME time and do the things that I want to do!”… THAT’S EXACTLY HOW I FEEL ABOUT MY MORNING TIME. Except if I’m honest, I think my morning hours are more productive because I’m not getting up at 430am just to waste my time binge watching YouTube like I might do if I were staying up late at night. But to each their own, to each their own 😉
After my shower, I painted my nails because they were looking rough. I tried this nude/chai type color from Olive & June… I don’t know how I feel about it yet. It looked really pretty in the bottle but on my nails, I just keep thinking about this one IG post I did where I wore a pair of nude-ish Lululemon leggings and everyone kept asking if I was naked. 🤦🏻♀️
After I painted my nails, I climbed into bed with my Kindle and read for a bit before calling it a night and sleeping!
That’s my Day in the Life! Again, just a reminder that some days feel busier than this, some feel less… some evenings, I have CG or somewhere to be so I can’t get into my pajamas at 730pm (LOL) but most days, if I can I do prefer an earlier bedtime. Let me know if your routine is any different than mine!
